Pleyel was initially a student of J. Haydn and completed his musical education in Italy. From 1795 he lived in Paris and, among other things, built a piano factory that still exists today. He left numerous compositions which at times rivaled Haydn's in popularity. 60 symphonies and above all chamber music.

Best known today are his numerous duets for string instruments, one of the most beautiful of which is presented here for violin and viola.

A transposition of the viola for cello is included with the edition.
