J.-M. Leclair, the "French Corelli" first worked as a dancer and ballet master. From 1723 he worked as a violin teacher, concertmaster and music director of orchestras at various courts in Italy, the Netherlands and in the service of Louis XV in France.
In his last years Leclair developed a somewhat exalted character. His wife separated from him and he lived in a flophouse on rue de Careme - Prenant, one of the unsafe areas of Paris. In addition to the opera "Scylla et Glaucis", premiered in Paris in 1746, Leclair primarily wrote works for violin - sonatas, trios and duets.
Aus den „6 Sonatas for two violins without bass“ op. 2, which he composed in 1731 and 1732, numbers 2 and 3 are presented here (AER 171). Both duos impress with their sonorous and playful character. This character is equally fully expressed in an arrangement for 2 violas - AER 172.
