The Goldberg Variations are a piano work that is titled in the first edition from 1741 - an autograph unfortunately does not exist - as "Clavier Exercise consisting in an ARIA with various changes in front of the clavicimbal with 2 manuals". The key of the work is G major. The Goldberg Variations are a high point of baroque variation art. Each individual movement has its own character. The connection between the variations results from the common bass theme and from a well-planned overall structure of the work with regularly inserted movements that are strictly canonical in the upper voices.
The total of 30 variations are 2, 3 or 4 voices. The nine purely 2-part pieces are ideal for a version for violin and violoncello.
A transposition of the cello part for viola is included with the edition.
The technical difficulty (1-10) is between 3 and 4
