Schubert composed this work, based on poems by probably three authors, a few weeks before his death in 1928. This grandiose concert aria, which places the highest demands on the singer in particular, is a wonderful duet between voice and clarinet. The transposition of the clarinet part into Bb presented here makes it possible to play this work with viola as well.
