Schubert's second string trio was composed in 1817; a year after he wrote his first trio, which is also in B flat major, for this instrumentation. Unlike the 1. Trio, this work has four movements.

The composer has a 1. version as well as a fair copy, after which the present version - in contrast to other editions - was edited.

This work is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful of its genre.
